Artist's Statement

As a visual artist, I call attention to the remarkable things I see. No need to search the world for amazing sights; its all right here around us. With my paintings, I shed new light on everyday life inviting you to see the familiar as if for the very first time.

Using everyday subjects, I seek compelling compositions by arranging value shapes while using unexpected color palettes. I love balancing a representational impression of my subjects with abstract compositions.

I use a painterly style to find that balance between form and formlessness. While using technical skills to reproduce some of the specific details, I prefer to selectively choose only what needs to be said and let the viewer fill in the rest. The viewer becomes an active participant in what they choose to take away from the works.

I paint primarily with oils incorporating loose painterly brushstrokes, where select (ed) lines and edges are blurred, though also may create drawings and studies in pastel and charcoal.

When people see my work, I like them to make a recognizable connection of familiarity yet still see something unexpected and surprisingly different. I start by recognizing pleasing geometric compositions of value and color shapes. The work connects with the viewer first with bold composition from afar, and then you may move forward to find a familiar subject matter at mid-distance, while up close you find a surprise in brushstroke, line or color.

Appealing compositions are everywhere, and they make strong impressions even before the viewer recognizes the subject. My subjects vary between common everyday still life objects, figures (animals and people), and landscapes. Although themes may differ, I'm most concerned with interesting composition of light and dark values.

Everyday, I feel surrounded by the treasures of life and reflect that in my artwork by empowering others to see the ordinary as extraordinary.
